The IMPACT Laboratory at USC was established in 1995 with research activities aiming at Improving Manufacturing Productivity through Advanced Collaboration Technologies. Since then the research at IMPACT has been expanded to address both fundamental and application issues of design theory, methods, and complex systems from both computing and cognitive perspectives.

The current research at IMPACT is centered around product innovation, design creativity, machine learning for design, and self-organizing systems. The ongoing projects include thinking style and design creativity, risk and uncertainty quantification for situation assessment, transfer reinforcement learning for collision avoidance, machine learning for design knowledge capture, and self-organizing robots for assembly tasks.

An industry supported project “AutonoShip” is being carried out at IMPACT Lab exploring technological basis for future autonomous ships.
